Fair Isle Tray
The Fair Isle tray was the result of a collaboration with an enthusiastic and creative knitter, my partner Deborah McDevitt. She was knitting a sampler using the complete range of colors produced by our friends at Swift River Farm. The tray concept was a means of presenting and framing the work while also making it a useful household item.
The tray is 24″x14″x2″. The main body is hand formed 11 gauge sheet steel. The feet, handles, and flower centers are cold rolled steel rod, the flower petals are hammered 16 gauge sheet steel. The finish is wire brushed and clear coated. The final weight with 1/4″ glass plate is 21.5 lbs. and the tray is in constant use.
Fair Isle knitting is a type of multicolored stranded knitting in-the-round which traditionally uses the many natural shades of Shetland wool to create patterns characteristic of the Shetland Islands of Scotland.
Our friends at Swift River Farm raise Shetland sheep and produce undyed yarns blended with 5% silk as well as overdyed yarns using natural dyes. For more information go to www.swiftriverfarm.com
