DiSilvestro Steel Works

Biography

I grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts when it was still an industrial city and it was there that I acquired a life-long fascination with tools and fabrication.

After attending Massachusetts College of Art from 1968 to 1971, I worked as a logger, then as a Teamster car hauler. During that time, I explored various art forms and discovered my passion for designing and executing works in metal. In 2006 I made the commitment to pursue my design work full time.
I design and fabricate functional items such as gates, trellises, railings and benches using a variety of common industrial steel products. My intent is to use these materials in a way that is fresh and visually appealing while satisfying all of the practical requirements necessary for effortless function.
My current work began as wire bending using small diameter steel and copper, working by hand with pliers. The work grew in scale and my chosen materials became the larger gauge steel rod and flat stock I use now.
I have found that this medium, a mix of drawing, sculpture and three dimensional design, suits me perfectly. The demands of bending dictate a certain pace and approach, the steel by its nature creates a particular look, visual elements can be very simple yet remain strong. The problems of design and fabrication are constant and unique to each piece. The solutions to these questions are always interesting and usually spark a new line of inquiry and possibilities. This continual schooling is what I thrive on.
